Municipal Government Programs

With financial support from the Government of Alberta, municipalities participating in the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) offer competitive long-term energy efficiency upgrades to residential and commercial property owners.  

Eligible CEIP Projects Focus On:

The CEIP program costs are recovered through the participating owner’s property taxes, allowing you to complete upgrades without having to put down the money up front. 

Repayment is flexible (with terms up to 20 years) and transferrable, with the project’s financing tied to the property. If you sell the property before the term is completed, the new owner can assume repayment built into their property taxes. Energy mapping 

Home Energy Rebates through the Home Energy Retrofit Accelerator (HERA) 

  • Part 1 of the HERA is fully subscribed with 2,382 participants as of November 30, 2022 

  • Helps consumers understand their homes’ energy efficiency 

  • Provides rebates for insulation, windows, water and space heating equipment upgrades 

  • Requires an expert EnerGuide Home Energy Evaluation 

  • Rebate stacking is allowed (to a maximum of 100% of the total homeowner investor) with other programs such as the Greener Homes Initiative offered by the government of Canada 

City of Edmonton Solar Rebate Program 

  • $0.40/watt towards the overall cost of the system for existing homes 

  • Newly constructed homes and buildings are eligible for $0.30/watt  

  • Covers ~15% of the installation cost 

  • The program has invested nearly $2 million in residential solar rebates as of May 8, 2023 

  • The Solar Rebate program is fully subscribed as of June 21, 2023

Hat Smart – A City of Medicine Hat Environmental Initiative 

EnerGuide Home Evaluation Incentive Program 

  • Hat Smart will rebate up to $200 directly to the energy advisor  

  • Program is currently fully subscribed as of June 28, 2023 

Existing Homes Incentive Program 

  • Designed to assist property owners with the costs of DSM retrofits 

  • Up to $5,000 for combined retrofits 

  • Program is fully subscribed as of March 30, 2023 

New Homes Incentive Program 

  • Designed to encourage construction of more energy efficient homes 

  • Includes benefits of solar installations 

  • Rebate up to $10,000 based on level of energy savings achieved beyond a typical new home 

Scratch & Win Incentive Program 

  • Rebates to residential electric and/or natural gas utility customers to purchase and install smaller energy efficient products (e.g. LED lightbulbs, thermostats) 

  • 20-100% of purchase up to $100 per item 

  • Application deadline: January 9, 2024 at 12:00 pm 

Solar PV Rebate Program 

  • Post-install rebate based on side of system 

  • Offers $750/kW of installed solar capacity (to a maximum of 20 kW) 

  • The town is currently accepting applications for solar rebates from residential and commercial consumers. 

Residential Environmental Rebates Program 

  • Residents can apply for rebates and incentives for energy efficient and environmentally friendly products 

  • Energy audit rebates, Energy Star appliances, windows and doors, solar hot water heaters, heat pumps, furnaces, e-bikes, snow and ice walking aids, studded bike tires or tire conversion kits
