Saving on farm operational costs can start with lowering demand charges.
- Aim to have a consistent amount of energy consumed by reviewing operation processes and how equipment is run. Large consumption in a short amount of time increases demand charges.
- Consider energy efficiency when investing in a new equipment, appliances, or tools. Compare wattage between tools or equipment before making a purchase. The higher the wattage, the higher the energy consumption.
- Accurately estimate operating demand load. Overestimating demand load results in overpaying for power when not using electricity at the full capacity. Underestimating electricity demand load can cause breakers to trip and cause equipment damage.
- Staggering equipment start-up will avoid turning on all appliances or machinery within a single 15-minute window.
