A water meter measures the amount of water used by a household.
Reading a water meter can help monitor usage, detect leaks, manage costs, and ensure bill accuracy. To read a water meter:
- Locate the water meter. These are often in basements or crawlspaces. They may have a lid or cover.
 - When reading the meter, write down every number from left to right exactly as it appears on the 'odometer style' display of your meter's dial. This includes all zeros at the beginning and any numbers in red or black at the end.

By taking a reading with water turned off, waiting a few hours and taking another reading, it will help detect water leaks or recognize the impact of seasonal usage like watering lawns and gardens.
