Finding the right company
You have the power to choose between the regulated rate company or a competitive rate company to be your electricity and natural gas provider.

Default retailers
Alberta utility consumers who don't sign a contract with a competitive retailer for natural gas or electricity are served by the default retailer in their area. The default retailers offer rates that are reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The Rate of Last Resort is the default rate for electricity, it will remain stable until December 31, 2026. The Default Rate Tariff is the default rate for natural gas, this rate may change monthly depending on market conditions.
New utility consumers may have to initially connect electricity and natural gas services with the default retailer in their area before considering other options, such as competitive energy contracts. Check out the default retailers below.
Albertans living in rural communities may be in the service territory of a Rural Electrification Association or a Natural Gas Co-op.
Competitive retailers
Albertans can choose to purchase electricity and natural gas energy from a variety of licensed competitive retailers. A contract for electricity and/or natural gas services from a competitive retailer will last for one to five years. It may take 10 to 15 days to set up services with a retailer; however, it can take up to 90 days depending on the specific situation. Confirm with the retailer when services can begin. Distribution companies
Distribution companies build and maintain the infrastructure that delivers power and natural gas. Distribution companies are responsible for disconnecting and reconnecting electricity and natural gas services. Consumers cannot choose their distribution company as this is based upon location. This means if a consumer is in the same location, the distributor will remain the same regardless of what kind of retailer is selected.
Distribution companies work directly with competitive and default retailers to ensure accurate billing through meter readings. The delivery portion of the utility bill is where consumers can see distribution and transmission charges, any applicable Municipal Franchise Fees or Local Access Fees, and rate riders.
Distribution charges make it possible for distribution companies to operate, maintain, and invest in the system. The AUC is responsible for determining and approving distribution rates.

Non-AFREA Rural Electrification Associations

Natural Gas Co-ops
A rural gas co-op is a not-for-profit cooperative, incorporated or continued under the Rural Utilities Act, that owns its own distribution system and supplies natural gas to members in its rural franchise area of Alberta.
